Aftermath of Steve Jobs Keynote
10 Jun '08 Filed under Apple Rumors, Review -
Having just watched the WWDC keynote by Steve Jobs, I am somewhat shaken by all the things that Apple has brought to us. It’s actually not that much - it’s just two things that were revamped. The new iPhone, dubbed3G iPhone. It is 3G and GPS-powered, it’s thinner and it’ll be available in black and white. Also pimped is .Mac, now rebranded as MobileMe. It’s basically the same thing as before, just with some new syncing features and stuff… I won’t go to much into talking about it as you can just read all about it on the Apple website.
Though there are three things that I want to touch on:
- The iPhone is all cool and looks better than ever. It’s available for just half the original price (200$). Totally rocking for new customers but those who’ve just bought the iPhone recently (like me) it’s a fucking kick in the ass. My iPhone basically has no more reselling value which is kind of sad. Though, I’ve known about the rumors so I guess I have to live with it…
- .Mac was never the coolest service that Apple has made … it basically sucked. With the new features that MobileMe offers, it does become quite interesting and offers things that are worth the money. Let’s see how it’ll go in the future.
- As MobileMe replaces .Mac, the question of the iDisk and the connection with iMap/iTweak remains in question. I think not much will change except for URLs but I’ll release an update for both when MobileMe becomes available.

I think it’s worth to mention the GPS capability of the new iPhone. I fortunately didn’t buy an iPhone yet because it wasn’t available in Switzerland and I didn’t want to hack it and be able to use only half of its functions.
Didn’t Steve look a bit tired and weak? An ageing icon is still an icon… I hope he’s fine…
With the price cut it lost part of its “Exclusivity” *sniff* on the other hand great for me as my Stocks aren’t doing well… *hehe*
I think the new MobileMe is great but I’m afraid of having to rewrite all the iWeb tutorials. But they mention that people can still use their addresses they own now and the .mac servers will still be up… That’s where I got confused… And thought that maybe I will need instructions for MobileMe AND .mac… We will see…
I stayed up until 3 a.m. to see the Keynote… I’m pretty tired
Greetings from Switzerland,

Has anyone heard if former iPhone users will be able to get a software update that will offer the new speedy services ie. 3G? Or is the platform completely different? Will apple offer this upgrade, or a service to convert the iPhone to the 3G iPhone capabilities?
Like you, I have had mine for only 3 months, so it would be nice to have access to the new cool stuff, but with my “old” iPhone.

@Cedric - I’m actually one of those freaks who is paying the contract with t-mobile
The GPS is definitely a nice addon and as I’ll get that new iPhone in any case. The exclusiveness loss is weird that you mention it because it really is a product that not everyone has. Now that it’s so cheap, Apple is entering a market way earlier than in the way that they have done with the iPod. I think it is a bit to overeager and might just end that the iPhone will fall into this large basket of already existing smartphones…
People say Steve got thinner and think he’s sick or .. tired .. looks like it - but I think hes doing well. He rocks
I mean hes in his sixties. Acceptable for people to be called old and frail at that age I guess. haha
I watched the keynote via Macrumorslive actually … gonna watch the vid right now
@Scott - Yeah, the software update will get the AppStore and other new software based features onto iPhones and iPod Touches for free - but the 3G and GPS is hardware. That cannot be updated. G3, is basically a better satellite internet connection than EDGE (what the current iPhone has).
