Googlemail has the great feature that you can mask or setup an alias for your email address. This turns your standard george@googlemail.com address into george@mycompany.com. When you send emails in the web interface, recipients will see the email coming from george@mycompany.com. Obviously this is what you want. If however, you setup Googlemail on your iPhone, Mail on the iPhone will send emails from your standard Googlemail address. Hence, some tweaking needs to be done here.

This tutorial will show you how you can setup Mail on iPhone or iOS 5 in such a way that you can use Googlemail via IMAP and send emails masked with your custom address.

Before we can get started you need to get some login information from your custom email address provider. What we need are the outgoing mail server details, or in short, SMTP details. Here is exactly what you need:

Host Name: (like smtp.godaddy.com)

Username: (usually your custom email address)

Password: (for the above custom email address)

Don’t panic about these details. They are usually written quite conveniently somewhere in the FAQ of your custom domain provider. Just search for SMTP.

Now Let’s get started. Open your iPhone and go into the Settings application. From there, navigate to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars tab and add a new account. Select Googlemail and enter your details.

A new account has now been created. Now reselect the newly created account. We will now have to edit the outgoing mail server settings. So tap on the SMTP button..

Then tap on Add Server…. Now enter the details from step 1. Turn on SSL if you like, but then enter the password. You can usually ignore the Port numbers. The iPhone will now verify the information. If it fails, you must have entered the wrong SMTP details. Then turn the server on.

This is it. Test if it works – but it should.

However! For some reason Googlemail allows the option to manage labels separately in it’s web interface and in whatever mail application you are using. I find this very annoying. So if you want Mail on iPhone to not add randomly Sent Messages or Trash labels to your emails, you need to change one last setting.
Go back into the account settings. Tap on Advanced. In Mailbox Behaviors make sure all options behave after the labels on the server. Not on the iPhone.

So here goes how you do it:

Backup your MacBook!

Make sure you run Mac OS X 10.5.6.

Download and unzip the modified kext file.

Using the Finder, navigate to
System/Library/Extensions
and delete the file
AppleUSBMultitouch.kext
Backing the file up to another harddrive isn’t such a bad idea.

Put the downloaded and modified kext file into the folder you just deleted the one file out of.

Open up Disk Utility and repair the disk permissions. This will take some time.

Restart your Mac. Enjoy full multitouch!

Fonts, fonts and fonts – thats what you have installed on your Mac! My fonts library has over 200 different fonts and it just becomes obscuring when I try to pick one good-looking font for the web!

Fonts for the web are limited. To get to the point for those who don’t like reading, here are the reasons:

Not every computer has your specific font

Different browsers might not render your font

Macs/PCs might not read your font

The biggest problem with using fonts is that not all computers have your font. If you plan to use a font that you downloaded from Dafont, then do not expect that your visitors will have that font. This will result in the browser replacing your specified font with it’s standard font. That of course will mess your site up. Shifting, ugliness, etc… – you know the outcomes!

Another problem is that each browser renders fonts differently. Firefox varies from Safari and both of them vary from Internet Explorer. Some might read your font, some might not! Safari is one of the best browsers to read all fonts. I have never had real issues using any fancy fonts with Safari – but as soon as I switch to Camino or Firefox on my mac (with the fonts installed), the fonts might render correctly. I do not know the reasons behind this – but it just sucks! Internet Explorer seems to ignore nearly all fonts except for the standard serif or sans-serif. Crazy!

Lastly, the Mac and Windows issue. I will not elaborate to much on this because it is pretty obvious that Mac and Windows things are not that compatible.

Basically it comes down to forgetting about the idea that you have found the global font for all platforms. Now people switch to options like sIFR or to just use images. Unknowingly, you kick Googles ass because it can no longer read any of the contents in your site!

So what are we to do?

To make it simple and painless: use any of the standard fonts. There is a collection of standard fonts that will render correctly in all browsers and on all platforms. The fonts aren’t the best – but someone takes what they can get!
So here is a list of them:

Arial

Arial Black

Comic Sans MS – cool

Courier New

Georgia – cool

Helvetica – cool

Impact

Times

Times New Roman

Trebuchet MS

Verdana – 100% all time working

If you are a mac user, you can find these fonts in the default font browser under the tab “Web-safe” fonts:

I know, this isn’t the best solution, so what else is there?

Well what I like to do is to simply use the font that I like. I then use CSS to apply a font family and a second font for backup. So when my favorite font is not accepted by the browser, it skips to the second font. The second font is one of the fonts in the list above and looks as similar as possible to the one you wanted. Thus, those who have the font and the correct browser enjoy your design capabilities and those who do not have your font, get to enjoy one of the default fonts.

Here is an example:

element {
font-family: "cool sans-serif seeming font", sans-serif;
}

So choose your fonts correctly! Test them in all browsers and with all platforms to make sure that you know how you render.

I have recently made a tutorial on how to jailbreak your iPod/iPhone. Now it’s time to move on to a second part of this…

John has dropped me a mail asking how to put NES ROM’s onto the iPhone/iPod or how to get widgets into the iPhone/iPod’s file system and so I thought, why not write a tutorial!

You can not only put NES ROM’s on your iPod/iPhone if you have access to the file system – but you have access to every single item and file in the iPhone/iPod!!! Nothing is no longer safe – it’s under your control. You can write your own app for the iPod/iPhone or you can modify existing ones, add new wallpapers – all up to you!

Just for your info, same things as far as rights and warranty of the iPhone/iPod and my blaming part in this, they are the same as in the Jailbreak Tutorial!

So, let’s get this thing started:

Before we can get started, you will have to complete several things in order for this tutorial to actually work. These are kind of the sub-steps for the main tutorial:

First thing and most importantly! You will need WLAN (WiFi) to connect your Mac to your iPhone/iPod. You cannot use any cables cause – DUH – the iPhone/iPod ain’t havin’ no ethernet port. If you do not have WLAN at your home, go to a friend or drop by a Starbucks or some WLAN bar.
Without WLAN – no chance.

Jailbreak your iPod/iPhone!!! Yep, that is a necessary step. With the jailbreak you have the ability to install OpenSSH which in return gives you the ability to access the file system. You can install OpenSSH by hacking it yourself, but the AppSnapp jailbreak is probably faster.
If you need to jailbreak it, here is an article on how to do it.

Next step is to instal SSH. SSH is either installed already if you have jailbreaked it – or if it isn’t you can use the Installer App to download and install it onto your iPod/iPhone.

Now you need a SFTP client. You can use any client (Coda, Transmit, ForkLift, YummyFTP, Cyberduck) that you want – but if you are still in need of a free one, use Cyberduck.
I will be using Cyberduck for this tutorial because I presume many will be downloading the free one if they do not have any FTP client. If you wan to buy a client – CODA!!!!

Get your brain cleared and get a coffee. You’ll probably need it.

Sub-steps completed, now let’s move on:

Turn on your iPhone and open the OpenSSH app which has an icon looking like a light-bulb switch. Check the the OpenSSH is on “On” or “I.”
Close SSH and now open the Preferences. Go to WiFi and turn it on. Select your network and connect to it.

Still being in the WiFi preferences, hit the blue circular arrow on your selected network. You will now see a couple of options and addresses, which includes the IP address of your iPod/iPhone. Note down your IP-adress!!! That you will later need.

Now you can put your iPhone to the side, but make sure it stays on for the duration of this tutorial. Touch it once or twice every 30 seconds or so.
Open your FTP Client and create a new connection. Now use this info for your connection:

- Protocoll:
SFTP

- Server:
123.456.789.00
(The IP-address you noted from your iPhone/iPod)
- Username:
root

- Password:
alpine

If you are using Cyberduck, your entered information should look something like this:

Now hit “Connect” and there you are right in the iPhone/iPod’s file system! Congrats.
Wait No! Your not done yet. If you wanted to place NES ROM’s and stuff on your iPhone/iPod, you are in the wrong place. You need to navigate backwards to the very top level of the system. In Cyberduck it would look like this:

Yep – Now your done! Congrats!

Now it is extremely easy navigating in the iPhone/iPod’s files because it is like Mac OS X. Apple has built the iPhone/iPod’s firmware on Mac OS X which makes it no difficulty for you to navigate in there.

I’ve walked around with iPod touch for quite a while now, and yes, it is jailbreaked! I let Ants run over my display, I play Labyrinth with the iPod’s built in accelerometer, and so on forever… People see my iPod touch and ask me, why do they not have these cool things – well cause mine is jailbreaked!

Jailbreaked means you get access to the iPod/iPhone’s firmware and then write/read on it how you like it. Apple does not allow it at this moment, though, they have said they will open the iPod touch and the iPhone up at the end of January or February. My guess is that they bring a new iPhone version at the Macworld ‘08 and make this “not-jailed” firmware a new feature.

In any case – can I jailbreak my iPod touch or the iPhone? Yes and it could have never been easier.

So before we get started, there are some points that I want to make. If you jailbreak your iPod/iPhone, you will void your warranty and all sorts of other regulations wether it be with AT&T or any other company. You are seen as a hacker in their eyes as soon as you have completed this tutorial. I know, it sounds horrible – but you are, breaking out of jail!
I struggled at the beginning if I should do it or not – but eventually I went with it because it is just awesome! New apps, features, look, everything – a new iPod/iPhone!

Is it secure? Yes. The method might sound obscure and error-filled – but zillion of people have done it and it works like a charm!

Lastly, Guimkie will not take any responsibility for anything that will happen to you or your iPod/iPhone after you have followed this tutorial. Use it on your own risk!

Having said that, I still suggest you do it!

So here we go:

Plug in your iPod/iPhone in your Mac. Open iTunes and check that you are version 1.1.2. If you are 1.1.1, then go ahead with step 4, otherwise, if you are 1.1.2, you will first have to downgrade and thus, you will continue with step 2.
We will later upgrade back to 1.1.2 – but for the jailbreak to work, we need to be at version 1.1.1!

Now we will have to downgrade your device. Download the 1.1.1 firmware for the iPod <a target"_blank" href="http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/SBML/osx/bundles/061-3932.20070927.p23dD/iPod1,1_1.1.1_3A110a_Restore.ipsw">here and for the iPhone here using FireFox. You must use Firefox for this to work! Make sure the file has the suffix of “.ipsw” and that you know where the file has been saved.

Now put your device into restore mode. First, hold the “Hold” button for about 4 seconds and then slide to turn it off. Once it is off, turn it back on by holding the “Hold” button for some seconds. As soon as you see the Apple logo, press the “Home” button for as long as the “Connect to iTunes” picture appears.

In iTunes, navigate to the iPod/iPhone and now hold the option key and click on the “Restore” button. You must hold the option key while clicking!

A window will pop up. Choose the downloaded firmware and hit “OK.” Now wait until the iPod/iPhone has finished working.

Now that your iPhone/iPod is in version 1.1.1, you can jailbreak it. Visit “Jailbreakme.com” and scroll down and click to “Install AppSnapp” on your iPod/iPhone’s Safari!!! It won’t help trying this on your Mac.

Your iPod/iPhone will do some work now, restart a couple of times and at some point, it will bring you back to the main screen where you will now find a new icon. “Installer” is now your man. He will be the key to all the new features of your iPod/iPhone.

Open “Installer” and go to then “Install” tab at the bottom. Now select “All Packages” and scroll until you get to “OktoPrep.” Select it and hit “Install”.

Now we can upgrade back to 1.1.2. Make sure your iPod/iPhone is connected to iTunes. Simply hit update! The iPod/iPhone will now update.

As soon as the update is done, eject your iPod/iPhone from iTunes but keep the cable connected. Close iTunes and now download this file. Unzip them and then open the “Jailbreak.jar” file by simply double-clicking it. Follow the instructions.

A tip from the TouchDev team was that you never install any type of new keyboards as they will ruin your iPod/iPhone!!!

Now, turn on your iPod/iPhone and you’ll have a jailbroken 1.1.2 iPod/iPhone. Congrats!

That’s all! Thanks to this and this for teaching me how to jailbreak my iPod!

Okay, maybe it wasn’t in 5 minutes – but that was due to the downloads and stuff. Not my fault.:-P

How do I get DVD movies into iTunes and on my iPod? How do I rip movies for iTunes? Can I do it for free?

Well, this post is the solution to your problem. I will guide you step by step through a totally free tutorial that only uses free software to rip your DVD's into iTunes and later enjoy them on your Apple TV or iPhone or iPod or whatever!

Is this easy? Hell yeah. Just some clicks and then you have it in iTunes.

Before we get started for this tutorial, I would just like to say that ripping the movies is illegal if you share or distribute them over the internet. This tutorial is intended to show you how you can get your self-bought DVD onto your own Mac and into your own iTunes. I think that for personal use you are free to rip them into your iTunes library - but don't trust me here for 100%, I am not sure on that!

This is a long, long post, so I did split it into two parts. So, click the link below to read on:

Well, this post is the solution to your problem. I will guide you step by step through a totally free tutorial that only uses free software to rip your DVD’s into iTunes and later enjoy them on your Apple TV or iPhone or iPod or whatever!

I think that for personal use you are free to rip them into your iTunes library – but don’t trust me here for 100%, I am not sure on that!

This is a long, long post, so I did split it into two parts. So, click the link below to read on.

In any case, let’s get started:

Get your DVD you want to rip and jam it into your DVD drive on your Mac. Close any Player that opens. Now check your time. Do you have time? Does your Mac have time to run the next hour or so? If yes, then continue!
If you later want a good cover for your ripped movie, then take a look at this post of mine.

Now visit this site and download the latest version of HandBrake. I will be using HandBrake 0.9.1 for this tutorial. HandBrake is the whole heart of this article, and without HandBrake, ripping movies for iTunes would probably not be possible. This is just a absolutely fantastic application.

Now that you have downloaded and opened HandBrake, you will get a window looking like this:

Navigate to the DVD via the sidebar and then hit “Choose.”

After HandBrake has read the DVD we can start setting up what get’s ripped and what not. We of course want the actual movie. So, in the main window, look for Source “Movie-Name” and then under “Title” select the option with the time that fit’s to the length of the movie. In my case, I want to rip Italian Job which is 106 minutes long. So, look at the options and choose the option that fits best for the time. The times might vary up to 10 minutes, depending on if they count the credits as part of the movie or not.
If you have no clue of what I am talking about, then see this screenshot:

You can also select to only rip certain parts from a certain chapter to another. If you want the whole movie then make sure you choose 1 to the max value (or max value -1 if you do not want the credits).

The “Destination” part should be quite self-explanatory – but the “Output Settings” can really make you crazy. So, let’s take a close look at them. For the “File Format” choose “MP4.” This is the only format that I am aware of that will work 100% with iTunes. To the right you have the option to choose “Codecs.” Take the “MPEG-4 Video/AAC Audio” codec because this is the one that works with iPods. The H.264 plays with iTunes, but cannot be synced to the iPod’s.

Now we move on to the more technical stuff. HandBrake offers a great variety of options that allow you to style the movie in whatever way you wish. We will start off with the “Video” tab. I will first tell you what each part means and then I will go into telling you what I suggest you take.

First, we have the framerates. Framerates are how many pictures (frames) pass in the movie in one second. The higher, the smoother, the less, the more the movie will be shaky (laggy). Anything between 20 and 30 is fine. The best and optimal is 29fps.

For the quality, you can choose to make the movie a target size, target bitrate or a constant quality option. Constant quality will probably take up the most space on your drive. Setting it a target will limit the file size – but will limit quality in certain scenes.

Grayscale encoding will make the whole movie Black and White. 2-pass encoding is for those who want real quality in their movie. It will do the process of ripping twice and then fuse those movies giving it exceptional quality. I always tick the 2-pass option because I want my movies in it’s full-blown quality! If you have chosen the quality to be 100%, then this is the same as having chosen 2-pass encoding.

“Picture Setting” allows you to define how large you want the movie to end up. Normal iPod’s (iPod Video, Nano 3. Generation & iPod Classic) have a screen-size of 320 by 240, where you only want to define the x size and not y. If you modify y, you will shift screen proportions. The iPhone has a size of 480 by 320. Again, just set your x component to 480.
For the rest of the iTunes things (AppleTV and other), make it as big as possible which most of the time is 720.

Now, having said all of that. I am a fan of making the movies full quality and I do not care how much space they take up, so this is what I am configuring:

After this long step, we are going to make it a bit shorter. Let’s move on to the “Audio” tab. Go to Track 1 and select your preferred language. For the mix choose “Dolby Pro II” or any of the others if you know what they mean.
You can have a second track if you wish, but that will make the movie about 50% bigger in size as it already was.
Then for the last options, set the bitrate to 128 and the Sample rate to 48. Lowering any of these values will drastically reduce the movie size – yet will lower the quality as well!
Lastly, I suggest you tick the button “Forced Subtitles Only” because in some movies, the characters speak Chinese or whatever and if you don’t have any subtitles it might not be that cool.
For example, in Rush Hour 3, Jackie Chan speaks chinese to some ambassador. On the DVD you get the translation – but without the option ticked, you will not get that translation in iTunes!

The next two tabs are quite easy and therefore we will take them in one step. “Chapters” are quite useful, especially with AppleTV because you can hit the forward button and move through the chapters. I recommend adding this. You can change the names into the real chapter names.
The tab “Advanced” can only be used with H.264. But even if you have that codec, it does not yet seem to work.

Ready? Hit the “Start” button at the top and then show the “Queue”. You can start ripping another Movie – but keep in mind, ripping movies will take it’s time and that doing other complicated and intensive stuff on your Mac can influence the movies quality.

That’s all you have to do! Now just drag the movie into iTunes and sync it with whatever “i” object you wish.
Now, If you need some cool album art (movie covers), then check out this post of mine.
Please remind yourself that it is strictly illegal to rip movies and then share them. They are only for your personal use.

So; hope you liked it! No wait, don’t go. There are three more things. One, if your movie finishes after like 5 minutes or it only completes the first chapter, then it might be copy-protected DVD from Sony or Disney’s (They tend to do that). For more information, take a look at the HandBrake Forums.

Then, do you like the HandBrake icon? Nope? Here is a great replacement one!

Safari 3 is Apple’s latest browser and is surely my favorite one in the world of browsers. Firefox, is just yuck, it has a ugly look and ARG – just horrible. We then have Opera which is the worse that I have ever experienced – I mean, just look at the icon??? Who wants that in a dock??? No one!!! BTW – same goes for the Firefox icon (Even though the fox is a nice idea). Better is the Camino Browser which is a mixture of Firefox’s browser engine and Safari’s elegance. Well done Camino group!!!

In any case, I’m a 100% Safari user and will never switch to a different one.

Now to the post, since Safari is quite new, it has some great features that have yet not been discovered. One of them is a advanced source-code inspector that makes life easier than ever, at least for developers.

Firefox has a plugin named Firebug which allows you to look at the source-code of a page, steal stylesheets in a snap and lots of other great things. Safari now supports this without any sort of plugin. A right-click inspector will allow you to get this:

The image above shows the loading time for certain things of my site. All visually interesting and the power of this “inspector” is just amazing.

Here is a image which shows the source code with syntax coloring.

This image shows how elements are set up within other elements, basically displaying the whole hierarchy and then the corresponding style attachments for this element! Coooool!

This is known through Coda already – but it is just nice to see this out of Coda.

Now how do you get this cool thing? It’s totally easy, just follow this steps:

Open Terminal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app).

Paste in this command line:

defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitDeveloperExtras -bool true

Hit enter and now open Safari.

Open any page and then right-click (or on a MacBook: ctrl + left click) and select the Element Inspector.

Now you have a new window with all the features above. If you want the Element Inspector in the same window as the actual page, then click on the lower-left icon looking like three boxes

If you want to get the inspector away, just paste in the same command line into Terminal, only with “false” at the end instead of “true.”

I hope you enjoy this little trick.
