Adding Haloscan Comments to iWeb

UPDATE: Haloscan has been purchased by JS-Kit. Hence, Haloscan is out of service and you can only use JS-Kit to add comments to iWeb. There is a new tutorial that will show you how to do this.

Are you one of those users who would wish to have comments integrated right into your site but you are publishing to a folder and so you can’t do that? Or you just want to use the awesome technology of Halscan to power your comments? This tutorial will show you in an extremely easy way how to do this!

For this tutorial, we will be using a free application called iTweak. It has been made to simplify such additions to the iWeb application and so it is just perfect to use.

So let’s get right started!

  1. First step is easy! Download iTweak and sign up for a Haloscan account.
Use the account to modify the styling of your comments stuff and make it appeal to you.
  2. Now, choose any existing pages and add a text-box to it which will later hold a link to allow visitors to add comments or trackbacks. Make sure you leave the text-box with it’s default style (ie.: do not change any fonts, colors, fills or whatever with the text-box).
  3. In the text-box write the following keyword. It will later be replaced with the actual comments link:

    %%HALOSCAN_COMMENTS%%

    See this image:

  4. Now publish your site and once it has finished, open iTweak and navigate to the “Discussion” tab. Right at the top you have the ability to type in your Haloscan username. Type it in and choose if you only wish to have comments, trackbacks or both.
  5. Choose your published site by hitting the “Choose published Site.” If you publish your site to a folder, you should know where you can find it. If you publish to .Mac, you find your site at the following path. iWeb ‘08 users use this path:

    iDisk/Web/Sites/SITENAME

On the other hand, iWeb ‘06 users follow this path:

    iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/SITENAME

Don’t forget to tick the check-mark for adding the Haloscan comments! If not ticked, it won’t do it.

  6. Lastly, you can hit the “Process” button and then your done! Make sure you are connected to the internet for the comments to show up.

  • Thanks for making iTweak and this tutorial. You have helped me in so many ways with iWeb! Thanks.

  • When i press process site after following your guide it says

“finder got an error: Can’t get name of alias “esparende:Web:sites:iweb:DJ Casper k:index.html”. (-1728)

  • when i tried this the website is blank ?/ whit, untill I re publish without the %% HALOSCAN……

    Any Ideas
    Dominic

  • I have typed %%%HALOSCAN_COMMENTS%% as a text box like the instructions say on three different pages of my site. However, when I publish the site and view it a browser, the “Comments” button is only clickable on one of the pages, so I can only make comments on one page. However, I can rank out of 5 stars on all three pages, so something about the Haloscan must be working, just not the comments part. Any ideas?

  • Hi Guys. I appreciate (as I’m sure we all do) the effort with itweak. One problem I have with the comments is it does add “Comments and Trackback” to the main blog entry pages, but not to the blog “mainpage” that lists several of the newer blog entries in a long column–here it still shows &&Haloscan_comments%%.

I have plenty of other comments and suggestions to make a program I would definitely pay for, but that’s for starters. :-)

  • Hi Max!
Your site has helped me enormously.
I was wondering if it’s possible to get in-line comments with iTweak, as opposed to having a pop-up window open every time someone leaves a comment.

    Thanks!

    Gaby

  • Also, any ideas why my site takes so long to load?

    Thanks in advance.

  • I try to select iDisk/Web/Sites/SITENAME but the iDisk/Web is greyed out. Any suggestions?

  • So I figured the first issue out. Now I get

“There has been an error while trying to add the comments.”

    I’ve triple checked the keyword.

  • Hello Max

thanks for your informative site, i really like it.
I installed haloscan with my iweb, but i dont like the pop up window. Is there any way I can make the comments appear in the page instead? thanks!!!

I got this error when I did what your tutorial suggested:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/airwaysu/public_html/neurolaryngology/index.php on line 1
This came up when I started the page to be open for comments.

I am no longer getting this error but still have not gotten any form of a comments box or system up. I have gone to the Holoscan site and opened an account. I have also gotten a google based Blogspot. Is there a way to link this to your page. This is not clear. I tried to follow the instructions on the Holoscan site for placing the HTML code on your page but can’t find the way to see the code for the page to follow the instructions specifically. Any suggestions?

  • Hey Max! The board that we are using right now is exactly what I am trying to set up, where it is embedded within the main page. How can I do that, without setting up a link to an outside page?

Thanks for this great great website!!

  • Is it possible to have the comments link say something other than comments? Such as reviews? Thanks.

  • I have tried unsuccessfully to add the Haolscan Comments. I have followed your directions I believe correctly. When I click “process site”, I get a window saying comments error and then a window saying contact-form error. Do you have any suggestions?

    Thank you

  • If you want in-line comments, use the HTML snippet function to open the Haloscan comments page in an iframe. If you set the Haloscan style sheet to a transparent background, it looks just like part of your page.

    For example:
    http://beesbythesea.com/Bees_by_the_Sea_Apiary/News/Entries/2008/8/11_Mystery_Bees.html

I would think itweak could be made to do this, as it only requires an HTML snippet.

  • How to get multiple comments sessions?

    Hells everybody,

Is there any possibility to get multiple comments sessions?
For exemple: i’ve got 3 blog entries and i want a seperate comments session for each blog entry. (3 comments sessions)

    Thx in advance

  • How to get multiple comments sessions?

    sorry, wrong letter;) “Hello” ;)

  • Hi!
I followed all of the above steps, but something’s obviously going wrong : )
On my site, I still see the “haloscan comments” textbox that I put there, iTweak doesn’t seem to have done the work.
The location of the site folder is correct, and I pressed “Process site” afterwards. I don’t get any error messages after processing.

Do you have any idea what might go wrong?

    Thank you very much!

  • Hi!
    Thanks for replying.
The keyword is correct, I copy-pasted it. I reran iTweak, in the meantime got an update of the software, but still nothing, the textbox stays just plain text…

    Kind regards,
    els

  • I can’t figure out how to get iTweak to post the links to my comments page. When I go to “choose published site,” there is no actual file to click on it just lets me click on folders. The best I can do is double click on the folder that my website is in and then it acts like that is ok, but when I publish the site the “%%HALOSCAN_COMMENTS%%” still shows up with no link. I followed all of the above steps multiple times and I can’t figure out what is wrong.

  • @Steve Manitt
I’ve experienced a “comment error” while processing site as well. I’ve fixed it now – the problem was in the ”backup” tab: you can select an iWeb version there so check if it matches with yours. I have iLife 08 and iTweak sets it to 06 by default (I guess). When I’ve changed it to 08 it worked perfectly.

  • Can we update the tutorial on how to do these in line? Even is it no longer requires iTweak which I will likely buy for the ‘other’ stuff anyway.

  • thank you so much for your effort.
I want to ask one more question. I would like to publish 2 blogs in my web. But only one of them can add comments. Although i use iTweak to add comments page in the second blog, iWEB delete the first blog’s comments page. I make me crazy. Could you help me and give me some advices?

    thank you so much.

  • How could I get a similar comments page, like the above onto my own website in iWeb?

  • Hello,

I was able to get the Comments link to appear, but it is not clickable, it appears to be like an image on the page. What am i doing wrong?

  • Hey, Love your work and products are all great except when they dont work :(

I tried iTweak to embed Google Analytics code and the Favicon into my iWeb site. The process is fairly straight forward and although I followed your instructions once uploaded the site looked all wrong with the menu missing links and some pages were screwed up. I re exported the site to my folder and personally pasted the google analytics and favicon code and finally uploaded it again this time it was back to normal again. I love the idea of iTweak but as yet have not been able to use it properly apart from backing up my site.

  • nothing happens for me. all i get is a text box with %%HALOSCAN_COMMENTS%%. any suggestions?

  • Haloscan are now directing new users to JS-KIT which uses a different comment system.
Are there any plans to update iTweak to handle js-kit comments ?

  • Yeah,

Same as above. I was excited about Haloscan, any plans to handle JS-KIT? Thank you.

  • Hello there,
    nice homepage! nice program!
Hope you can find a way ’round the new JS-KIT. Thanks for wonderfull support and tutorials!

  • I still don’t get it, I publish to a folder. So I made a new page, added the code, made sure that the new page would not be in the nav bar. saved and published to the folder. ran itweak.

Do I need to upload the files of the page I added the code to. Or file do I need to upload to the host server?

    Thanks

  • Hello,
will you update Itweak in order to work with JS-kit comments ?
    Thank’s

  • I cant register for a haloscan acount! How do I get and account. Go see haloscan for your self. HELP!

  • Hi there,

I am having the same problem as the last two posters. It seems that haloscan comments is not the “JS-Kit” which in and of itself seems like a sweet addition. However, since I don’t feel like dusting off dreamweaver to update a blog, I was hoping you all had some way to make either this new kit work with iTweak, or another way to add comments.

    Thanks for all you do!

  • Does it work for iwork 09?

Also, Haloscan has some changes after integrated with JS-Kit, is there any we have to do for using iTweak?

    thanks :)

  • Okay all you guys have the JS-KIT problem. I have looked at Haloscans website and I can, as a matter of fact, still sign up and retrieve the codes from the site. Hence, there shouldn’t be any problem with Haloscancs aquisition by JS-Kit.

    Am I wrong?

  • I can’t find anywhere on the Haloscan or JS-Kit site to sign up for an account, only to log in with an existing account. Am I missing something obvious?

    Thanks!

  • Ah I see. Haloscan closed its doors for access. Alright, let me redo the tutorial for JS-Kit.

    It’ll be up later today.
