Thanks to the clever guys at MacRumors, the multitouch gestures known from the new MacBooks are now “available” to the MacBookAir as well as all the other MacBooks with semi-mulitouch. YAY!!!
So here goes how you do it:
- Backup your MacBook!
- Make sure you run Mac OS X 10.5.6.
- Download and unzip the modified kext file.
- Using the Finder, navigate to
System/Library/Extensionsand delete the fileAppleUSBMultitouch.kextBacking the file up to another harddrive isn’t such a bad idea.
- Put the downloaded and modified kext file into the folder you just deleted the one file out of.
- Open up Disk Utility and repair the disk permissions. This will take some time.
- Restart your Mac. Enjoy full multitouch!
Thanks to DjAmTraX for providing these great instructions.

Hi Guys,
Will this hack work on the White Macbook (early 2008).
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz , 4Gb RAM , 250 GB HDD.
10.5.6
Thank you and happy new year.
Miki.
Miki,
If your MacBook supports the rotation or three finger gestures, then yes. Otherwise, sadly not.
Thanks for the wishes. Happy new year to you as well!
Max
Hey…thanks…I just did it on a February 08 MBP and it worked like a charm!
Hi mate, just tried it on my macbook (2006) it doesn’t change anything.
Does the preference pane change at all ?
Cheers, Harry
2006 is to old. They didn’t have any multi-touch on laptops back then.
hi people i know this is hard to answer!! but i want to hack my macbook(white, early 2008) to get multi touch, so want i did was copy the AppleUSBMultitouch.kext from a demo macbook aluminum and i also found one file in untiled/library/preference panes/trackpad
so i followed the instructions installed 10.5.6 then added the kext file and then i copied the trackpad.prefpane file into the same directory as the demo thinking perhaps that would help.
that was like two weeks ago… no luck
then now today 25 feb a friend bought a new macbook and now i have the new macbook installation disks!!! but i search through every file i jus couldn’t find much help the i went to untiled/library/preference panes/trackpad and right clicked then show package contents… and to my amazement the video’s for the multi touch is there!!!! so how do i get it to work???
but im going to try and just install osx again!!! using the new macbook insatll disks, im just waiting for time machine to finish copying and the new adobe trial to finish!!
i will post to show my results
if anyone would like to help and u have 10.5.6 installed…. please would you go to ur untitled/system/library/preferencespanes/trackpad and just see the package contents and see if u can see the multi touch videos..
if u can please post a comment telling us u can see them
mine does have multi touch. How can it recognise 2 finger scrolling and right clicking ?
It can just be 2 finger recognising trackpad ?
would this work on a the new mac book white? 2.13 ghz, 160 gbs, nvdia 9400 (mid 2009 model)
thanks!
Subscribing to Georges question. I have a MacBook from april 2009, 2 GHz, nvidia. Can it work? Is it worth a try?
thanks
I think it should – you can try. Just make sure you backup the original file.
I tried it. The MB is still working, no problems at all, but there is no difference neither. No difference in the preferences panel nor any differences in behaviour. So sadly, didn’t work on the last white MacBook. I just wonder if I should put the old kext file in place or if I should just leave the new one since it doesn’t seem to make any difference.
hi, could this work on a oct 2007 macbook 2.2ghz “Santa Rosa”? Some say it only works with the “Penryn” processors and later….
as for hadubard: It appears that the ‘wrong’ file isn’t a problem for your system, however, you never know what kind of problems could occur. so if the altered file doesn’t work i wouldn’t take any risk and just replace it with the original one.
Hi guys,
I’ve just installed Snow Leopard on my macbook ( MacBook3,1 santa rosa late 2007 – X3100 ) and i was really disappointed because I thought I was going to get the multi touch (that’s what they’ve said on MacLife a couple months ago) and i didn’t

So I’ve decided to try to find a hack and i found your website so I was like ok it’s for X.5 let’s try it on X.6 but when i navigate to System/Library/Extensions there is no files in the folder so i guess it’s over on SL.
Please let me know if there is something i can do or if there is a new way to hack the multipad.
thanks !
To Cuilhem Chaumont: I found it through: Click on finder->Click on Macintosh HD->Click on System->Extensions->then there should be AppleUSBMultitouch right under AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext.
I am repairing disk permission on SL right now
I will post again to let you guys know.
Srry guys, this doesn’t work on SL. The trackpad in the Preferences doesn’t work. Not for SL.
ok thanks anyway
Hii guy
i have macbook white 2.1 ghz intel core 2 duo
memory 2G 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
and i only have the two finger scroll
will teh multi touch work if ill download it?
I believe hair extensions are a great way for girls to get the length and thickness hair that they require. Particularly with different kinds available such as clip in extensions. You just place then in and you’re done. You really can’t go wrong. I think hair extensions generally get a bad name when you get extensionists who don’t know what they are doing. Fitted correctly and you should have zero problems.
