iMap - Creating Sitemaps for iWeb
iMap FAQ
iMap is an extremely easy-to-use application and so there shouldn’t be many errors or problems. In any case, there are always problems that people might have, and so I have contrustructed a little FAQ page. If you have any suggestions or want to add a FAQ, then contact me.

-
Is there some Tutorial?
Of course there is! The tutorial will probably answer most of the FAQ’s that are posted here. So I really, really recommend watching the Tutorial:Watch Get-On-Google Tutorial with iMap -
Meta-Tags Error?
This error occurs mostly if you are a .Mac user. The reason behind is that the .Mac server is not capable of responding to the data amount that iMap sends. Try using a ethernet cable, close all other apps accessing the iDisk and restart iMap.
For 99% of all cases, this problem only occurs to those that use .Mac. So delete your site from the iDisk, republish in iWeb and then run iMap again. It should work after that. -
“Can’t Get Alias” Error? Deactivate iDisk Syncing - what???
The problem comes up when your iDisk Syncing is activated. In order for iMap to work, you need to either get the actual iDisk hooked up or you deactivate your syncing. In the System Preferences, go to .Mac and then into the tab “iDisk.” Then make sure that you see “iDisk Syncing is turned off” and the button shows “Start”.In any case, make sure that the .Mac iDisk preference looks like this:

Personal Domain (CNAME)/Domain Forwarding?
The Apple Personal Domain feature is now supported in iMap 2.0. Enter any path you want - and simply choose your Site which is located on the iDisk. See the FAQ below for more info.If you Domain forward or domain mask, then please always use your .Mac address!!! -
Can’t verify Site. Stupid Server/Robots Error?
This is not related to iMap, so I shouldn’t be blamed, but the solution is easy.If you create a robots.txt file and then try to verify your Site, you will get a error saying something like your server did not respond in a certain time (or something like that), due to the robots.txt file. What you do, is you now wait about 10 seconds and then simply try again. It should now work and your site should have been verified. If it still does not work, then just wait some more minutes and give it another shot. -
Where do I find my Site Folder?
Good question! If you publish to .Mac, you will find your Site on the iDisk. For that, open iMap, choose your folder and click on the iDisk. Now you see several folders, one of them is called “Web.” Open that folder and again, in that folder is another folder named “Sites” (and maybe others). Open the “Sites” folder. In there are now just one folder or several, depending if you have several sites in iWeb or just one. Select the folder to whom you want to add the Sitemap or use with iMap.On the other hand, if you publish to a folder, simply navigate to the place where you published your iWeb Site to and select the folder. iMap cannot access files which are on a server, so you need to create the Sitemap before you upload to your Server. -
What is my Domain Path?
The domain path probably sounds a bit difficult the first time you here it - but basically it just means to type in the same URL, that you would type in Safari or Firefox! But, if you do not get that, then just take a look here. If you publish to .Mac you will type something like this:http://web.mac.com/cooldude20/Stupid_Site/sitemap.xmlOf course you have to change the
cooldude20to your actual username and theStupid_Siteto your actual site name. Be sure to watch out for capital and small letters as well as the_’s. If you name your Site in iWeb something likeStupid Site, then iWeb will automatically change that toStupid_Site. In other words, you need to replace the spaces with underscores. If you publish to a folder, then your domain path will look something like this:http://jones-family.com/Mikes_Site/sitemap.xmlNow you need to replace the
jones-family.comwith your actual domain and theMikes_Siteto your actual sitename. Again you need to watch out for capitals and underscores. See the paragraph above for further explanation. -
What is my “Ping Google” address?
Again, sounds difficult at the beginning - but actually it’s dog poo (another word for easy). What you need to type in looks something like this:http://jones-family.com/Mikes_Site/sitemap.xmlorhttp://web.mac.com/cooldude20/Stupid_Site/sitemap.xml. So change thecooldude20to your actual .Mac username, theStupid_Siteto your actual sitename and if you publish to a folder, then change thejones-family.comto your actual domain andMikes_Siteto your actual sitename. That easy!Do watch out for capitals and underscores! Note that every normal space in iWeb you give to your sitename or an actual page, gets replaced with an underscore (”_” - that is an underscore).
