Aftermath of Steve Jobs Keynote

Having just watched the WWDC keynote by Steve Jobs, I am somewhat shaken by all the things that Apple has brought to us. It’s actually not that much – it’s just two things that were revamped. The new iPhone, dubbed3G iPhone. It is 3G and GPS-powered, it’s thinner and it’ll be available in black and white. Also pimped is .Mac, now rebranded as MobileMe. It’s basically the same thing as before, just with some new syncing features and stuff… I won’t go to much into talking about it as you can just read all about it on the Apple website.

Though there are three things that I want to touch on:

  • The iPhone is all cool and looks better than ever. It’s available for just half the original price (200$). Totally rocking for new customers but those who’ve just bought the iPhone recently (like me) it’s a fucking kick in the ass. My iPhone basically has no more reselling value which is kind of sad. Though, I’ve known about the rumors so I guess I have to live with it…
  • .Mac was never the coolest service that Apple has made … it basically sucked. With the new features that MobileMe offers, it does become quite interesting and offers things that are worth the money. Let’s see how it’ll go in the future.
  • As MobileMe replaces .Mac, the question of the iDisk and the connection with iMap/iTweak remains in question. I think not much will change except for URLs but I’ll release an update for both when MobileMe becomes available.

“iPhoney” Dilemma

Having bought an iPod touch shortly after it’s introduction in late 2007, I have a short while ago moved to an iPhone. There are not many differences, the only thing that’s different is that you get to telephone and have EDGE. Let my explain my story of how it went:

I was excited about the new touch interface stuff from Apple and I just had to have something. Wether the iPhone or the iPod – just something! My old phone wasn’t working anymore and so a iPhone seemed very lucrative. Though, the prices were just stunning high and I wasn’t ready to buy it with that price. That would have been over 1300$ a year and I could have invested that money in much better things.
So I went ahead and bought the iPod touch. Great thing! It was thin, had touch and with 8GB then, had more than space than what I needed. Of course I would have liked to have it at 80GB so I can get all my movies onto it – but that is just how Apple went with it.
Then, about a month ago, my old phone broke completely. The iPhone has become to the most hacked product ever made by Apple and with all the jailbreaks and what-their-called, made it extremely easy to just use the phone in any country with any SIM and provider.
I went ahead sold my iPod touch and bought an american iPhone over eBay. Dead easy and the thing was in my house within two days.
Now I am on the iPhone and I really regret buying an iPod touch first, because I wasted 300$ (not completely wasted, the fun was there) and then added 400$ for an iPhone. Now that I think about it, I could have bought the iPhone then, not phone with it (aka have just the iPod touch features) and later jailbreak it.

I would like to warn anyone who is interested in buying an iPod touch. If you have the slightest notion of wanting an iPhone at some point in the future, then spend the extra 100$ on the iPhone rather than buying both the iPod touch and iPhone together. I really recommend that! Don’t go through the dilemma that I had! :-D

Accessing iPhone/iPod File System

I have recently made a tutorial on how to jailbreak your iPod/iPhone. Now it’s time to move on to a second part of this…

John has dropped me a mail asking how to put NES ROM’s onto the iPhone/iPod or how to get widgets into the iPhone/iPod’s file system and so I thought, why not write a tutorial!

You can not only put NES ROM’s on your iPod/iPhone if you have access to the file system – but you have access to every single item and file in the iPhone/iPod!!! Nothing is no longer safe – it’s under your control. You can write your own app for the iPod/iPhone or you can modify existing ones, add new wallpapers – all up to you! :-D

Just for your info, same things as far as rights and warranty of the iPhone/iPod and my blaming part in this, they are the same as in the Jailbreak Tutorial!

So, let’s get this thing started:

Jailbreak iPod/iPhone in 5 Minutes

I’ve walked around with iPod touch for quite a while now, and yes, it is jailbreaked! I let Ants run over my display, I play Labyrinth with the iPod’s built in accelerometer, and so on forever… People see my iPod touch and ask me, why do they not have these cool things – well cause mine is jailbreaked!

Jailbreaked means you get access to the iPod/iPhone’s firmware and then write/read on it how you like it. Apple does not allow it at this moment, though, they have said they will open the iPod touch and the iPhone up at the end of January or February. My guess is that they bring a new iPhone version at the Macworld ‘08 and make this “not-jailed” firmware a new feature.

In any case – can I jailbreak my iPod touch or the iPhone? Yes and it could have never been easier.

So before we get started, there are some points that I want to make. If you jailbreak your iPod/iPhone, you will void your warranty and all sorts of other regulations wether it be with AT&T or any other company. You are seen as a hacker in their eyes as soon as you have completed this tutorial. I know, it sounds horrible – but you are, breaking out of jail!
I struggled at the beginning if I should do it or not – but eventually I went with it because it is just awesome! New apps, features, look, everything – a new iPod/iPhone!

Is it secure? Yes. The method might sound obscure and error-filled – but zillion of people have done it and it works like a charm!

Lastly, Guimkie will not take any responsibility for anything that will happen to you or your iPod/iPhone after you have followed this tutorial. Use it on your own risk!

Having said that, I still suggest you do it!
