Image Zooms … what? Not sure what I am talking about? Take a look at the demo.

The internet has quite a variety of scripts that allow you to create these zooms. Here are just a few:

• FancyBox
• LightBox
• FancyZoom

All of them are very easy to integrate, but Cabel Sassers FancyZoom is the simplest. That’s why we will be using his.

Now let’s get started.

1. For this tutorial you will be needing four things:

   » iTweak. It’s free.
   » This search and replace database file for iTweak.
   » The actual FancyZoom. Download it from the blog post.
   » An iWeb-site with an image. That image needs to be enabled as a hyperlink. That hyperlink needs to go to an image file (the image that should later enlarge). The file type should be .jpeg or .png. For more details, see the FancyZoom post by Cabel.

   

2. Now publish your iWeb site to your default location.
3. Now go ahead and take a look at the downloaded FancyZoom folder. Inside there you should find two further folders. One is named images-zoom and the other js-global. Open up the images-zoom folder. Inside that folder you will find another folder. Open that one up as well. In there you will find a collection of images. Move all of the images into the folder js-global two directories higher. You can now trash the images-zoom folder.

   

4. Rename the folder js-global to fancy-zoom.
5. Now we have to do some nasty little code editing. What you have to do is open up the file FancyZoom.js and edit line 44 from this:

   var zoomImagesURI = '/images-global/zoom/'; // Location of the zoom and shadow images

   to this:

   var zoomImagesURI = 'fancy-zoom/'; // Location of the zoom and shadow images

   Alternatively you can just download the edited file and replace it with the original one.

6. Open up iTweak and navigate to the Search & Replace tab. There you will find a button labeled “Open Table.” Click on it and now choose the file downloaded previously. The file is named FancyZoom.itwksr. Once you’ve opened it up, you should see something like this:

   

   Make sure you tick the option to “Search & Replace Code.”

7. Now navigate to the “File Copy” tab in iTweak. Tick the option to “Copy Files.” Then click the “+” button and for your source folder select the renamed folder fancy-zoom (step 4). For your destination folder select your published iWeb site.

   

   Optionally you can save the “File Copy” table using the “Save Table” button. That will allow you to reopen the table the next time you launch iTweak without having to manually reselect your folders.

8. Now click the button in the bottom-left labeled “Choose Published Site.” Navigate to your published site and hit “Choose.” Then hit the “Create” button and iTweak should do it’s job.
9. Now you’re done! Visit your site and enjoy the zoom you’ve got.
   Please do note that when you publish again … you’ll have to start all over with this tutorial as iWeb overwrites the published files each time you publish.

• Favicon Tag now XHTML Transitional valid
• Contact Form is no longer based on redirects. Thus, Google shouldn’t give you any sitemap errors.
• Password Protection made a bit easier by combining the two textfields into one. The tutorial is already updated.
• The addition of a favicon causing weird characters such as “d>d>” to show up in the site; now fixed.
• iTweak no longer reads widget markup, google verification and other unimportant files. This makes the processes way faster and no longer causes the hitcounter error on the google verification file.
• iTweak will no longer fail to add the contact form if other xml files are present.
• Contactform will now take the style of textbox in which the keyword is contained for 100%. No more ugly fonts.
• Fixed another important bug in which the favicon addition causes your site to end up so corrupt you can’t even trash. Sorry about that.
• Lot’s of bugs are fixed.

Please just continue to update to the latest versions of iTweak. The newest version of iTweak is now 1.4.9. Make sure you run that version before contacting me about errors or bugs. They might have been fixed already.

For this tutorial, we will be using a free application called iTweak. It has been made to simplify such additions to the iWeb application and so it is just perfect to use.

Please note that this tutorial is only available to those who publish to a folder and upload to a server that is capable of running .htaccess files. Please ask your hosting service first before you start this tutorial.

1. As stated earlier, you will have to have downloaded the latest version of iTweak (this tutorial requires at least version 1.4.7). Publish your site from iWeb as well.
   To protect your site, you need to have a password, a username and the absolute path to another file (more on that later).
2. We will start off with the login data.
   htAccess, the method for the password protection, requires the login data to be encrypted. .
   To encrypt your login data, visit this site. Enter your username and your preferred password into the two provided textfields. For this tutorial I will be using “Hello” as my username and “World” as my password. See this example:

   

   Click “Create Password” and continue to the next step.

3. Now you will get a page with your username and you password jammed between two dark blue bars. It should say your username and then a combination of weird letters and symbols separated from the username through a colon.

   

   Copy this whole encryption and get ready to paste it into iTweak (Shortcut: Apple + C).

4. Open up iTweak and navigate to the “Security” tab. Tick the option to password-protect your site and in the text-field labeled “Login Data” paste in the encrypted data from the previous step. Make sure you copy/type this password 100% correctly!!!
   You can now type in your username in iTweak as well. Your window should now look something like this:

   

5. Now we have to deal with filling the last text-field; the absolute path to the .htpasswd file. There are two options to solve this. Either you can use a file I made to easily get the absolute path (requires a PHP-capable server) or you have to contact your hosting service and ask them about the absolute path.

   » Option A: Go ahead and download this file. Place the file named “info.php” inside the published folder from iWeb. Upload the whole folder (or just the contents, depending on how you like it) to your server. Now visit the file in your browser by typing a URL similar to this:

   http://domain.com/Sitename/info.php

   or if you only upload folder contents then type something similar to this:

   http://domain.com/info.php

   When you view the file you should find a huge blue table outlining all sorts of geeky stuff. Search for “SCRIPT_FILENAME” and to the right of that you will see the absolute path to the “info.php” file.
   Now copy the whole path except for the first slash and the “/info.php” extension:

   

   » Option B: If you server does not support PHP, then simply contact your hosting provider and ask them for the absolute path to be used inside your .htaccess file. They will know what your talking about.

   In both cases, please note that the path varies from each person! There is no scheme or pattern that you can follow.

6. Having acquired the absolute path in the previous step, copy and paste it into the provided text-field in iTweak. See this image:

   

7. Now choose your published site by hitting the “Choose Published Site” button and then hit “Process Site.” iTweak will now protect your site with the 100% secure .htaccess method. It will create two invisible files that you won’t see in the Finder. If you upload your site to your server by simply grabbing the whole published folder, then thats fine and the protection will work fine. On the other hand, if you just upload the contents of a published folder, then you have to use something like Coda to view invisible files in your Mac and make sure they get uploaded as well!
8. Done! The next time you publish, simply reuse iTweak to add the protection and your ready to go.

After a really long wait (and empty promises), me and Jay have managed to bring out the all new iTweak. If you can’t wait to get it, here is the product page.

Although the application is finished, I haven’t had any chances to bring out any new tutorials of any kind, so you will have to use those that exist for iWebExpander. I will bring out the new ones as soon as possible.

Sorry for making this post very sloppy…

In the meantime, here is a list of how things work:

• Favicon tutorial works just like the old one
• Google Search works also like the old one
• Hitcounter, same thing as well
• Haloscan comments can be integrated by adding a textbox with the contents %%HALOSCAN_COMMENTS%%
• Contact form works with textboxes created on two pages. In the textbox where you want the form to appear, you type %%CONTACT_FORM_MAIN%% and in the textbox on the page where you want the “Thanks” message, you type this: %%CONTACT_FORM_SUB%%. Then in iTweak, select the two pages and your ready to go.
• The search and replace feature works as one expects. You can save the table data and load existing ones. Remember, this replaces the HTML of your site. This also means that your replace code show be in HTML

As I am still working on iTweak, I have finally reached the very end of releasing it. There are only two more bugs and features to complete and then this app will go out in the world.
One of the great new features of iTweak is the ability to create a PHP contact form for your iWeb site. I have been creating a very good one and I am close to actually using that one.

Okay, I have finally put together a close-to-working version of iTweak. It does nearly everything but there are still, some annoying bugs that I want to fix. That’s why I am also sending out a private beta to certain testers so they can really give me some feedback.

It is a private beta because I do not want to send out a not-fully working version and then get zillions of support mails. Sorry about that.

BTW – All of those who gave iWebExpander up cause of the Timeout error, that error is now fixed! YAY!

Anyone who feels that they should be part of the beta, drop me a mail and I’d be willing to send you the beta. Though, this is not to get the next version, this is for me getting feedback! I will only send the beta to those of which I feel they can provide that feedback and not just tell me “this is not working but I love iTweak.”

iWebExpander has been doing quite well in the past three months. It has become one of the most used applications in cooperation with iWeb and it makes us feel quite proud to find iWebExpander to be found in all forums.

There have been some issues with iWebExpander (like the application freezing) – but Jay and myself have looked into them and we have solved nearly all of them.

One thing was the name of iWebExpander is that it sounds totally stupid. I gave it this name because it related iWeb and the application itself and thus it would lend it very self. Yet now, with iWebExpander being so popular, I thought it would be a great opportunity to change the name.

So, iWebExpander is now iTweak!

Though just a name change is not all. iTweak will have all the features that iWebExpander, which are bug-fixed, but new features as well. These will be the new features for iTweak:

• Backup iWeb 08/iWeb 06 sites
• Add a favicon to iWeb
• Add Google Search to iWeb
• Add hitcounters to iWeb
• Add comments to iWeb
• Add a PHP Contact-form to iWeb
• Search & Replace function for any code…

If you want any other features, now is the time to ask for them!!!

And when will this new stuff come? I am so into working with it, that it will probably be done by the end of the weekend!
