Jailbreak iPod/iPhone in 5 Minutes
26 Dec '07 Filed under Tricks, Tutorials, iTunes -
I’ve walked around with iPod touch for quite a while now, and yes, it is jailbreaked! I let Ants run over my display, I play Labyrinth with the iPod’s built in accelerometer, and so on forever… People see my iPod touch and ask me, why do they not have these cool things - well cause mine is jailbreaked!
Jailbreaked means you get access to the iPod/iPhone’s firmware and then write/read on it how you like it. Apple does not allow it at this moment, though, they have said they will open the iPod touch and the iPhone up at the end of January or February. My guess is that they bring a new iPhone version at the Macworld ‘08 and make this “not-jailed” firmware a new feature.
In any case - can I jailbreak my iPod touch or the iPhone? Yes and it could have never been easier.
So before we get started, there are some points that I want to make. If you jailbreak your iPod/iPhone, you will void your warranty and all sorts of other regulations wether it be with AT&T or any other company. You are seen as a hacker in their eyes as soon as you have completed this tutorial. I know, it sounds horrible - but you are, breaking out of jail!
I struggled at the beginning if I should do it or not - but eventually I went with it because it is just awesome! New apps, features, look, everything - a new iPod/iPhone!
Is it secure? Yes. The method might sound obscure and error-filled - but zillion of people have done it and it works like a charm!
Lastly, I, Max Karreth or Guimkie will not take any responsibility for anything that will happen to you or your iPod/iPhone after you have followed this tutorial. Use it on your own risk!
Having said that, I still suggest you do it!
So here we go:
- Plug in your iPod/iPhone in your Mac. Open iTunes and check that you are version 1.1.2. If you are 1.1.1, then go ahead with step 4, otherwise, if you are 1.1.2, you will first have to downgrade and thus, you will continue with step 2.
We will later upgrade back to 1.1.2 - but for the jailbreak to work, we need to be at version 1.1.1! - Now we will have to downgrade your device. Download the 1.1.1 firmware for the iPod here and for the iPhone here using FireFox. You must use Firefox for this to work! Make sure the file has the suffix of “.ipsw” and that you know where the file has been saved.
- Now put your device into restore mode. First, hold the “Hold” button for about 4 seconds and then slide to turn it off. Once it is off, turn it back on by holding the “Hold” button for some seconds. As soon as you see the Apple logo, press the “Home” button for as long as the “Connect to iTunes” picture appears.
In iTunes, navigate to the iPod/iPhone and now hold the option key and click on the “Restore” button. You must hold the option key while clicking!
A window will pop up. Choose the downloaded firmware and hit “OK.” Now wait until the iPod/iPhone has finished working. - Now that your iPhone/iPod is in version 1.1.1, you can jailbreak it. Visit “Jailbreakme.com” and scroll down and click to “Install AppSnapp” on your iPod/iPhone’s Safari!!! It won’t help trying this on your Mac.

Your iPod/iPhone will do some work now, restart a couple of times and at some point, it will bring you back to the main screen where you will now find a new icon. “Installer” is now your man. He will be the key to all the new features of your iPod/iPhone. - Open “Installer” and go to then “Install” tab at the bottom. Now select “All Packages” and scroll until you get to “OktoPrep.” Select it and hit “Install”.
- Now we can upgrade back to 1.1.2. Make sure your iPod/iPhone is connected to iTunes. Simply hit update! The iPod/iPhone will now update.
- As soon as the update is done, eject your iPod/iPhone from iTunes but keep the cable connected. Close iTunes and now download this file. Unzip them and then open the “Jailbreak.jar” file by simply double-clicking it. Follow the instructions.
A tip from the TouchDev team was that you never install any type of new keyboards as they will ruin your iPod/iPhone!!! - Now, turn on your iPod/iPhone and you’ll have a jailbroken 1.1.2 iPod/iPhone. Congrats!
That’s all! Thanks to this and this for teaching me how to jailbreak my iPod!
Okay, maybe it wasn’t in 5 minutes - but that was due to the downloads and stuff. Not my fault.:-P

Apparently you have to hold the option key, no the apple key to restore the older firmware. That was frustrating for a while. Thanks in advance for everything.

Hey, thank you very much for such a handy tutorial! It worked neat. The only question I have is; is it secure to jailbreak the iPod in terms of using passwords, personal or sensitive information? I mean, is there any
way for me to know if any of these apps I’m installing now,are spyware or something like that?
thanks in advance!!

no - you do not know. good idea - but i never thought about this
its like download software for your mac, there could still be some spyware in the mac.
i kind of believe that the iphone community for developers is quite a reliable community that does not do bad things. secoondly, nullriver from the installer app, allows only certain apps to go into the installer. they might already filter junk.
i havent had anyone spy on me - at least that i know of
